Eye makeup is perhaps the most personalized aspect of makeup application, as techniques that flatter one eye shape may not enhance another. Understanding your unique eye shape is the first step toward creating eye makeup looks that truly complement your features. Let's explore techniques for the most common eye shapes.
Almond Eyes
If your eyes are shaped like almonds (with a visible crease and iris that may disappear slightly beneath the upper and lower lids), you have the most versatile eye shape. Virtually any eye makeup technique will work for you. To enhance your natural shape, focus darker shadows on the outer corner and blend upward toward the crease for a lifted effect.
Hooded Eyes
Hooded eyes feature a prominent brow bone with limited visible lid space when the eyes are open. The key is to create definition without overwhelming the limited lid space. Apply matte shadows slightly above your natural crease (where it will be visible with open eyes), and tight-line your upper lash line to define eyes without consuming precious lid space.
Round Eyes
Round eyes appear circular with visible white around the iris. To elongate this eye shape, concentrate darker shadows on the outer third of the lid and extend shadow and liner outward in a wing shape. Applying eyeliner to the outer two-thirds of the eye (rather than all the way to the inner corner) also helps create a more elongated appearance.
Monolid Eyes
Monolid eyes have little to no visible crease. This eye shape offers a beautiful canvas for gradient color techniques. Try a gradient effect with lighter colors near the lash line, gradually building to deeper shades toward the brow bone. Winged liner that gradually thickens toward the outer corner adds beautiful definition.
Remember that these are guidelines, not rules. Experiment with different techniques to discover what makes you feel most confident and beautiful.
